Academic appointments have included Johns Hopkins University (Wilmer Eye Institute) and the University of Maryland. Dr. Wong prefers clinical practice most of all. Given the complexity of vitreoretinal disease, he feels that communication between the patient and family is usually lacking. Educating the patient and the family is the key to a successful relationship. Understanding retinal disease is difficult, accepting visual loss is harder.

One of the areas foremost surgeons, Dr. Wong enjoys the challenges of vitreoretinal disease. Newer technologies have improved outcomes and decreased patient visits. Surgical patients now enjoy fewer visits and better outcomes thanks to developments in instrumentation. More and more patients are being diagnosed with macular degeneration and the results are most promising with the arsenal of Avastin®, Lucentis® and Macugen®.

The profile of vitreoretinal practice is changing rapidly. Newer technologies allow more and more patients to benefit from therapy. Diagnostic tools continue to improve the ability to diagnose disease earlier and earlier. Outcomes continue to improve. The volume of information that patients and families now need to understand can hopefully be mastered with tools such as this web source.

Dr. Wong, or "Randy," is married, has five children, enjoys competitive tennis, has a black-belt in kick boxing, EMR and the internet.
