Normally we request that you arrive at the surgical center about 1 hour prior to your scheduled surgical time. For instance, if your surgery is scheduled to start at 8:00 AM, you would need to arrive by 7:00 AM. After you register at the surgical desk, you be placed on an operating stretcher in the pre-operative holding area. Interviews will be conducted by the nursing and anesthesia staff. You will have an intravenous line (I.V.) started, sign consent forms for anesthesia and surgery, meet your anesthesia provider and get your eyes dilated in preparation for surgery. See why we need a whole hour?
Just before you are transferred to the operating room you will say goodbye to your family or friend. Almost all of my surgery is performed under sedation and you can be fully awake. Through the intravenous a short acting sedative is injected and, shortly after, the eye will be numbed while you are sedated. You will not feel or remember a thing. The surgery will be performed. If you wish, you may bring in your favorited CD for your to share with us during surgery! When surgery is finished, a patch will be placed on your eye.
